If Zuckerberg did not sell information, he may have needed to charge a monthly fee to users of his site to make it lucrative.

Before facebook, in order to generate revenue onling you would need to generate a certain number of visits from different people to your site. The amount of clicks to generate a living salary from this was astronomical.
